As the name implies, sound-isolating headphones isolate internal and external sound waves. The headphone itself, along with ear canal cushions (often called "tips"), create a passive physical barrier that greatly reduces unwanted noise from being heard. Isolation technology uses the same principles as earplugs, only there is a small speaker inside.
